Unknown Chestnut. Project for a 20 year old Student?

Maybe a Furber. A Sears canoe model. Or one of numerous Quebec built boats that were distributed by Sears.
I've certainly seen worse. You learn by doing and better to learn on a less than perfect boat allowing you to develop the skills and knowledge in case you find that Omer Stringer Beaver or elegant Pete somewhere in the Bush.
Try stripping and sanding the exterior first and see what you have got. Remove any rot. Make new parts. Find the right fasteners. Tis not a Pigs Purse out of a Mole Hill, or however the saying goes.

Most Chestnuts and Peterboroughs " DO " have serial numbers or model numbers stamped into a stem face. They can be very difficult to see . Almost definately a Chestnut or a Chestnut made Peterborough. The decks are right, it has a shoe keel and the keel screws are the right pattern, the center thwart is fastened by 4 carriage bolts, the thwart shapes are right ,the seat frames are right and were originally hand caned. If it has roughly a 36" beam and 12" depth then [ depending on what year it was built ] it is a 16' Chestnut Deer or Pal. It is not any of the other previous mentioned makers.
