Old Town #149622-12 A local man has it for sale. It is 12' flat stern green with oars and brass oar locks. It was described to me in excellent condition, hardly ever used. It has been in his uncles barn up in the rafters. When I told him I have been looking for one to fish with his comment was that it is collectable and in such nice shape I may not want to use it and risk scratching it etc,. Anyway, I am trying to learn about this one before I go over and spend my money. I am totally new to wood canoes. I have seen that some can be for sale at several thousand dollars. That is not my league so I also need to find out what a reasonable price for me to pay is. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My email is mkalogridis@nycap.rr.com

Hi Michael--

Old Town 149622 is a 12 foot AA grade (top grade) sportboat model completed between September and November 1947. It has open mahogany gunwales and all other trim is mahogany as well-- this is the definition of "AA grade". The boat has half ribs, a keel, a painter ring, and was originally painted dark green. It was shipped to Montgomery Wards in Rome, NY, on March 12, 1947.

The scan of this record is NOT attached below-- I don't know why it won't attach, but after spending too long on it I'll post this and try to attach the scan in a reply. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. The build record for 149622 is attached below. The sport boat model was listed in the catalogs from 1941 to 1971 so you may find that there are a fair number of them around. Most of the information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?t=57 about how to value an old canoe can be applied to an boat like this. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Michael, buy it, use it, enjoy it.

Many of us own canoes that are 90 plus years old that we use for fishing and tripping. If they get scratched or damaged we repair them. One of the beauties of wood and canvas is that it lasts forever when properly cared for (and even if not).

You may look here in the classifieds to see other boats for sale and get an idea of some asking prices. I paid $1,000 for my 53 Thompson with an older motor. The boat needed no repairs and only paint and varnish to look like new. I would have paid more......
