How about a smell test. I know, sounds odd, but I was cutting new ash gunwales years ago and a customer was wondering what I was smoking in the shop. Ash has a distinctive odor if you get my drift. Find a new piece of oak and ash and then cut or sand and smell them. Maybe that might help determine what you have.

Many thanks. I could not smell anything, probably its too old... 100 Years :)
However, I got some sample pieces of Ash and White oak and compared them.

It is really Ash, fits way better with the grain of the wood and the color as well.

Thanks
