War Canoe restorations

Wooden Canoes are in the Blood
Mike Rechlin shown on the first day of restoration work on the 28’ War Canoe strip built by Tony Mecurio for racing in the early to mid 70’s.
This canoe is now resident in the Forestry Club cabin at Paul Smith’s College.
The original forms were also used to build a second, 30 ft long “Water Buffalo” which was paddled by Rob Stevens and Kathy Gowen in the 2024 Assembly Paddle By & Salute.

Work has begun to restore both of these in the coming months, including for use at the 2025 Assembly.

Cool. The Boy Scout camp Sabattis in the ADKS, had several massive war canoes. The camp is being shut down and sold to NYS...I wonder what happened to those canoes? The districts other camps water access wouldnt be big enough to even float them!

To piggy back on this post....their back. I did these I think 8 or 10 years ago. You know you've been doing this a while when you start to see the same canoes coming back. Their back for repairs , rotten decks, touchup and varnish. I had to make a new cart so I can move them around. I think they got heavier. Not Old Towns but 25 footers. Camp ONEKA in the Poconos
