Wanted: Canoe Rudder

I’m looking to buy a rudder to complete my ‘62 OTCA canoe restoration project. The canoe has factory-installed gudgeons. All that I am missing now is the rudder with pintles just the one pictured.

The Old Town rudders changed shape significantly over the years so the catalog pictures at the link below may help. The one in your picture is is from the 1942 Armstrong and Galbraith catalog showing a style that was popular in the 1920s. The image below shows a range of options. The one in the middle is from 1959 and probably matches the shape that would have shipped from the factory in 1962. Good luck,

Thread 'Old Town canoe sailing rig evolution'

The Old Town Canoe Company catalogs show an interesting progression of the standard sailing rigs over the years as shown in the catalog pages attached below. The first sailing canoe was shown in 1907 with tear drop shaped leeboards and no rudder. The next major change was to a more square leeboard with a handle on top in 1913. I recently bought two sets of pintles and gudgeons from Springfield Fan Centerboard company and am well pleased with the result.

I have a rudder. However it won’t fit either of my sailing canoes without significant modification to the rudder or changes to the hardware on the canoes. Have you seen a rudder like this before and know how it would have been attached? Since it lacks the curve to mesh with the rounded stem on a canoe, I am assuming that the gudgeons would need to extend out 2-3 inches.

Yes, but not on a canoe. You can probably make it fit with some modifications and the correct pintles. Good luck,
