Trimming excess canvas

Nearing the end of my Chestnut Chum restoration, I trimmed the excess canvas after the second coat of color went on the canoe. I marked the line using a gauge I made which runs along the rib tops and has a leg about 3/8" longer on the outside of the canvas and a slot which accommodates the excess canvas.

It makes a consistent line to cut, regardless of the nature of the top edge of the planking, which in my case was NOT consistent. Here's the cutter I use instead of a free-hand utility knife. It allows an easy to control cut that avoids cutting into the ribs.
