Curious about Wooden Canoes
I acquired these three quick, entertaining reads this past year.
"The Survival of the Bark Canoe," by John McPhee, 1975
An extraordinary 150 mile trip through northern Maine by the author in the company of Henri Vaillancourt and three others. The story includes Vaillancourt's bark canoe building methods in the wilderness with minimum tools.
"Canoeing With the Cree," by Eric Sevareid, 1968 printing
A true adventure story of a 2250 mile, 4 month trip in a used 18 ft. Old Town from Minneapolis to York Factory on the Hudson Bay by high school students, Eric Sevareid ( later a CBS news commentator) and Walt Port in 1930. The stories of the trip written for newspapers launched Sevareid's career in journalism and catapulted him to fame.
