we found an old town canoe @ a garage sale,
owner thought it was a winner, but we reached an accord
rough; small hole on the side and no canvas
it has a number;147227 78 on the strips of wood @ either end
it measures out @ almost 18'
any help in identification would be most appreciated

My Old Town is #146611, so yours is marginally younger than mine, which was built in 1946. I'm sure someone will reply with more detail before long...

The canoe with 147227 was assigned to an 18' Guide model in AA grade. (BTW - what you thought was "78" was probably actually 18 - the final digits following the space is the length - if it's not and you do have a 78 footer - all bets are off!) It had Ash rails and trim, half ribs, outside stems and a 1/2" bang plate. It was painted Dark Brown and shipped to Bolton Landing, NY (Lake George and 60 mi. north of Albany) in April of 1947. A copy of the build record is attached.
