Varnish, varnish and if in doubt add another coat! The protective qualities of a good varnish cannot be underestimated. Seen here in the deck of a 1900 Peterborough cedar rib canoe. #woodencanoeheritageassociation #canadiancanoemuseum #peterboroughcanoe #woodcanoe

OLD FATHER THAMES: This is the Hennerton Backwater which loops off the River Thames in Oxfordshire UK being enjoyed for its serenity by David Millward in his 1930’s Old Town OCTA Spring paddle days are with us all soon. DISTANCE IS NO OBJECT : This 1900 Peterborough Cedar Rib canoe nestles against the bank of the upper River Cam in Grantchester UK some 3400 miles from where it was built in Peterborough Ontario but it is only 26 miles from Peterborough UK. A canoe for all seasons on a beautiful river. #woodencanoeheritageassociation #woodcanoe #peterboroughcanoe #canadiancanoemuseum

TIGER, TIGER BURNING BRIGHT. The late Tom McClouds 17’ Old Town HW #127140 dates from 1940 when it began its life as a rental canoe at East Potomac Park on the tidal Potomac. Here it sits above the Otonabee River in Peterborough Ontario #woodencanoeheritageassociation #oldtowncanoes #canadiancanoemuseum #woodcanoe

Tyger Tyger, burning bright,
In the forests of the night;
What immortal hand or eye,
Could frame thy fearful symmetry? (William Blake)

If you look closely you can see one of Tom Seaveys original saddle seats which are great for scuppered gunwales on wood canvas canoes. The saddle can be moved fore and aft to improve trim. Search Azland Traditions.

GO URBAN: whilst remote wilderness paddling is often ones goal, urban paddling can offer a different reward. Here a 1950’s Chestnut Playmate canoe passes Cow Tower. This is an artillery tower by the River Wensum in Norwich, Norfolk, England. Built between 1398 and 1399 by the city authorities in response to the threat from France and indigenous English rebels. History meets history!

JUST CHILLING : Sailing a canoe can occasionally be strenuous but this is not always the case as shown here. This image was in the Old Town Canoe Company catalogs from 1973-1975. It was taken near Russian Mission, Alaska on the Yukon River in a Guide model with a 55 square foot sail. #wcha #canoe #woodencanoeheritageassociation #woodencanoe #yukonriver
