Moving Old Town's 34 foot long war canoe form, alone. Dylan Schoelzel of Salmon Falls Canoe in Shelburne, Massachusetts found a good way to move a war canoe form up the hill to his barn for storage using a tractor. See http://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/14373/ for more details. #wcha #canoe #woodencanoeheritageassociation #woodencanoe #salmonfallscanoe #oldtowncanoe

OJIBWE BIRCH BARK CANOE FROM THE 1870s: The wonderful texture and construction details of an old birch bark canoe really come to life in this remarkable photograph. Member Bob Diebel restored the canoe, using traditional materials and methods, and has donated it to the Minnesota Historical Museum. This canoe, and two other birch barks, have been in Bob’s family since the 1880’s, when they were purchased from Ojibwe Indians in Minnesota. Through the restoration process, Bob has become an expert at digging and splitting spruce roots! #wchaorg #canoe #woodencanoeheritageassociation #woodencanoe #birchbarkcanoe #minnesota

CEDAR CITY!: The WCHA Assembly is the one time each year that the universe of wooden canoes converges in one place for 4 days of fun, learning, and sharing. Cedar City naturally becomes the center of the event, and the lawn is covered with a hundred or more canoes of all types, ages, and conditions, from elegant restorations to “needs a little work”. Vendors supply our members with parts, restoration supplies, and expertise, and everyone is willing to lend a hand in the construction tent, or share a thought on the vintage of an old canoe. This photo was taken at Assembly 2007 at Keuka College. The four extraordinary canoes in the foreground were lovingly restored by Dave DeVivo from Rochester, NY. #wchaorg #canoe #woodencanoeheritageassociation #woodencanoe #keukalake

THE OLD CANOE SHOP: Member Chris Pearson modeled this wonderful diorama of an old-fashioned canoe shop and a wood/canvas canoe under construction. You have to look carefully, but check out the many details – spilled varnish, dropped tools, wood shavings, and stains from a smoky woodstove. Chris built the model in 1/12th scale and thinks that the canoe builder is out taking a break somewhere down by the river, as fishing often misaligns his priorities. #wchaorg #canoe #woodencanoeheritageassociation #woodencanoe #modelcanoe

PADDLE FROM A LEGEND: Member Mark Adams submitted this picture of a beautiful cherry paddle, made and inscribed by the legendary canoe builder Walter Walker. It is one of two Walker paddles that he owns –this one was made about eight years ago. The incredible deep blue of Lake Tahoe provides a perfect background! TIME TO GO A-COURTIN’: BONITA is a Charles River-area courting canoe in near-pristine, original condition. The 16’ Bonita has 48” decks and highly recurved stems, leaving a cozy 5-foot cockpit. Bonita retains her original mahogany backrest, flagstaffs and pennant, and a pair of original paddles painted to match the red and dark blue paint scheme.

Shari has kindly suggested that it might be fun to share some good before and after canoe restoration images on social media. Feel free to post some in the Canoe Photo Index area here and let me know if you are willing to have them shared on the WCHA's social media accounts. Thanks,

Benson

BIG CANOE, SMALL CAR: Carl's Paddling at http://carls.paddlin.com/thule.html has demonstrated that even one the smallest cars can carry one of the biggest canoes with a good rack. This is a Honda with a 34 foot long Old Town war canoe on top. A larger vehicle or trailer is usually a better solution. #wcha #wchaorg #canoe #woodencanoeheritageassociation #woodencanoe #carlspaddlin #oldtowncanoe
