Curious about Wooden Canoes
Greetings I have found a canoe with a serial number 16 26 10 .It has the old town diamond head bolts and old town style decks but no other markings. Any ideas ? Thanks, Kris

The spacing that you indicated is not typical for a canoe serial number. Is your number followed by a space and two more digits indicating the length in feet? Let me know which digit is the least clear and I will take another look at the records. You may want to try a flashlight at a very low angle to emphazise the shadows or a crayon with paper like a grave stone rubbing. You may be able to identify your canoe from other characteristics described at http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/id/ in the Wood Canoe Identification Guide. It would also be helpful if you could post some pictures here along with the length and a few more details about your canoe. Feel free to reply if you have any other questions.

Hi Benson, Thanks for the response. Those numbers are identical on both stems. The canoe is 17' long with sponsons.Any other suggestions?

My guess is that you have the Old Town canoe with serial number 162610. This is a 17 foot long, CS grade, Otca model with a keel and sponsons. It was built between November, 1954 and June, 1955. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on July 12th, 1955 to Detroit, Michigan. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan was created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or contribute to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
