Please help me determine the scarcity of this canoe the serial number is 142213 17. Many thanks for the assistance. Br, Seth

Seth,

Old Town serial number 142213 17 belonged to a 17-foot CS (or common sense) grade HW model that was built in 1945 and shipped to a yacht company in Cleveland. It had open spruce gunwales and ash decks, thwarts, and seats. It had a keel and was originally dark green. Given its wartime production, it may have had seats without cane and hardware that differed from the standard Old Town materials.

The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

If you are selling your canoe and plan to use this build record information as part of an ad, please consider giving the WCHA credit for this information on eBay or craigslist or wherever your canoe is listed.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Well, there is only one with that serial number as Norman has shown with the build record provided previously. That particular model and length has the largest estimated production as described at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/models.html so an average of about 274 of them were made each year. The HW model was the most popular model as shown at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/models.jpg and the chart at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/lengths.jpg shows the 17 foot length as the second most common. Please reply here if this doesn't answer your qeustion.
