Hoping you can help me determine the origination of this red canoe and it's value. I'm guessing it's an Old Town. Photos attached.

Welcome, the Old Town with serial number 146909 is a 17 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, HW model with spruce planking, open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, a keel, and sponsons. It was built between November, 1946 and January, 1947. The original exterior paint design is shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design37.gif and was known as the design number 37. It shipped on February, 2nd, 1947 to Clintonville, Wisconsin. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. It appears that the sponsons were removed at some point in the past. The valuation link Paul listed above and similar canoes shown at https://www.woodencanoe.org/classifieds should give you an idea of the value. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson
