Fishing Guide
Good Evening, A friend of mine has a UFO that has a serial number that is 20288 18. It is an 18 foot canoe and a previous owner painted the inside with grey paint. He is actually a bit uncertain but I thought perhaps we could try this number. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

It appears that Kennebec never issued this serial number and the Old Town with it is 17 feet long. My guess is that your friend may actually have the Carleton canoe with this serial number. It is an 18 foot long, regular grade, Carleton model with red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, oak decks, oak thwarts, oak seats, a keel, and sponsons. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on July 11th, 1932 to City Island, New York. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you (or your friend) will donate, join, or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you so much Benson. I received a picture of the canoe and in fact it does have heart shaped decks, a carry thwart just aft of the bow deck and diamond heads on the bolts. I will pass this info. on the him. He will likely want me to post it for sale here in the classifieds.
