Serial Number Request- Old Town

I am interested in obtaining the build record for 146795, a 16 footer with keyhole decks and a black decal. I am guessing it to be a WW2 vintage.

Thanks

Good Call--

Hi Mike,

Old Town 146795 is a 16 foot CS (common sense) HW model canoe that was completed October 1946- January 1947, with open spruce gunwales, slat seats, sponsons, and a keel. No mention of wood species used in the trim. It originally was painted OT design #46, then shipped to Montgomery Ward in Rome, NY, on April 8, 1947. The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

Image of design #46 is courtesy "The Complete Old Town Canoe Company Catalog Collection, 1901- 1993", available on CD from http://www.wcha.org/catalog/ and http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/cdrom.htm on the web.

Does this canoe still have the slatted seats and sponsons? Is it yours, or are you "considering"?

Kathy

Hi Mike,

Old Town 146795 is a 16 foot CS (common sense) HW model canoe... Does this canoe still have the slatted seats and sponsons? Is it yours, or are you "considering"?

Kathy

Hi Kathy,

It's one I have had for awhile and sort of forgot about. Yesterday while I was getting the SN off of my IG I pulled the number off of this CS. Now that I think about it, I guess that it did have sponsons with it when I originally located in a hay loft years ago.
I think I left them there.
I'll never own a canoe with rubber baby buggy bumpers. I even sold off a gorgeous Abercrombie and Fitch OT sponson canoe years ago knowing full well that I would be tempted to "improve it" if I kept it.

The seats are missing but the tell tale signs were there. That's how I decided on my build date guestimate.
That paint job is atrocious.. there is no chance it will ever see that again.
I'm painting my 14 foot a similar color without the racing stripe but it is a bit of a toy anyway.

Thanks for the quick reply. Here's to too many canoes and not enough time, one of life's simple pleasures.

Kind of like a Christmas present to discover a canoe you've forgotten about... it's sort of like that here... I forget some of the details about individuals in the fleet, which makes it fun inspecting them when I have the courage to climb the ladder to the loft.
