Serial # Help

Hello,

I just purchased an Old Town Tripper with a serial number 223944. From other research on the hull ID card (ending in 79E) I believe it's a 1979 model, but that's the end of my success.

Thank you in advance for your assistance discovering the history of this great watercraft.

The Old Town build record for serial number 223944 shows a fiberglass kayak so that isn't a good match. Can you reconfirm the serial number and hull identification number. Some pictures might help too. Thanks,

Benson

The Old Town canoe with serial number 223899 is a green Tripper so that isn't a good match either. My guess is that you have number 223844. This is a 17 foot long Chipewyan Tripper model that weighed 84 pounds. It was built in December, 1978. The original exterior color was red. It shipped on December 29th, 1978 to Seattle, Washington. The back side of the card shows that the warranty card was returned in June, 1979 and it stayed in Seattle, Washington. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join, or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. The link below shows a similar canoe that shipped under the same order number. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

A few pictures of decks, seats, thwarts would help to confirm if it is an Old Town. Screws holding the rails in place are not the norm for OT. These are normally secured with rivets.
A Tripper is a very distinctive hull. It would be hard to confuse for anything else.
