Serial Number Request: Vintage Old Town Tripper

Curious about Wooden Canoes
Hello, could I please ask for assistance identifying what I believe to be a very early model Old Town Tripper I just purchased for what I feel was a great deal at $200? The serial number is XTC9577TM73K. It has been modified for whitewater use with 4 thwarts and open cell foam knee pads added. I’ll post some pictures to illustrate. I’m planning on using it for camping on local creeks and rivers in the Midwest and can’t wait to get it out on the water to see how it performs. Thank you in advance for any assistance that could be offered.

The seller told me her father used it many times on the New River in WV. I’ll probably add Kevlar skid plates to help protect the Royalex from gravel and rocks when the water gets boney. I’d also like to pull of the thwarts to treat the wood but they seem to be in pretty good shape. Not sure if it needs 5 of them, but I guess it adds lashing points for gear….

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with hull identification number XTC95772M73K and serial number 195772 is a 17 foot long Chipewyan Tripper model that weighed 73 pounds. It was built in May, 1973. The original exterior color was blue. It shipped on June 6th, 1973 to Lexington, Kentucky. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. This canoe shipped with a single thwart in the middle of the canoe so you can easily remove the others. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Have fun with it,

Benson
