Serial # 6274

I saw the photos on the other post. that's the Swartz Creek canoe for $375. I have some cell phone shots of it.

I agree with Gil that it could be a Saint Louis Meramec Canoe since both the Old Town and Carleton records for this serial number show a 17 foot long canoe and Kennebec doesn't appear to have ever issued this number. The information at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/meramec/deck.jpg and http://dragonflycanoe.com/wood-canoe-identification-guide/ may help. It would be helpful if you or Dave could add some more pictures in addition to the ones at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?9193 in your other message.

ufo 1.jpgufo 2.jpgHaving seen it in person, I think it is war era. Steel slotted screws. But may be a replacement. It just looks not that old. The current remaining deck is a replacement triangle. The ribs are very narrow and far apart. In talking to another member smarter than me, it was suggested it may be a narrow rib New York Thompson. I think the short inwales are from rot, possibly. I wish I had paid more attention to the plank pattern. the seats are on cleats, but not quite Shell Lake type cleats that I've seen. So, I wonder if the ser no. is consistent with St Louis?
