Blue Viking

Wooden Canoe Maniac
Still trying to get a build record on Old Town serial # 734436 14 please. I am pretty sure I have the numbers right this time. Thanks for your patience. Its barely legible :(

look again

the records project goes up to about 210,000 as I recall. It is going to take a couple more centuries for this number to be built.

You may have a canoe from far into the future. Paddled to our present on a "stream of consciousness". I read that somewhere. Probably built by one of our current members' grandchild.
I should've saved this for 4/1/08.

That is sooooo funny !............Thanks for making my day!......I give up on trying to get a serial # off this one............I do know it is a 14' sponsoned OT boat in W/C that is all mahogany trim and transom.........pre-WWII and the owner claims it to be a 1937.........Oh well!..........I appreciate the patience of all!.

The Old Town Canoe Company issued serial number 1,000,000 within the last year or so as described at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/models.html so this implies that they have also already issued number 734436. I suspect that it went on a plastic kayak though. My guess is that you have the boat with serial number 134436. This is a 14 foot long, AA grade, square stern model with open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, a keel, outside stems, a floor rack, and sponsons. It was built between December, 1941 and August, 1942. The original exterior paint color was dark green with T. (tropical?) green. It shipped on August 21st, 1942 to Newbury, New Hampshire. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan was created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php when it is time to renew again.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your boat. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson
