restoration to begin on OT 15' canoe

Curious about Wooden Canoes
Looking closely, the number appears to be 168098 - 15.

The "1" might be a "7" but I don't think so.

I was told once that it was about 1947 - but that would be a lower number, right?

Do you have the build records for this canoe? Thank you.

I am really interested in knowing what the plank and gunwale materials are!

Our scanned build records of OT canoes end around 1975 with numbers something above 210000 -- we have no serial number record starting 768xxx. The canoe with serial no. 147000 was completed in January 1947, to give you an idea of 1947 serial numbers.

By the late 1950's and 1960's, the OT build records did not contain as much information as earlier records did. While it is likely that your planking is western red cedar and the ribs are an eastern white cedar (Atlantic Cedar, Maine white cedar). Once in a while, but not commonly, OT used some cedar other than western red cedar for planking.
