Hello. I was recently handed down an old 1960 (?) Old Town canoe from my Aunt. I'm wondering if you could look up the specific build details for this particular beauty. Seems to be a sailing canoe too. The serial number is 173235. Thanks for your help!

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 173235 is an 18 foot long Otca model with a keel, a bang plate along the full length of the keel, and a painter ring. It was built between July and August, 1963. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on August 26th, 1963 to Ridgewood, New Jersey. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. The sail rig is not mentioned so that may have been added later, which was not unusual. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
