The Old Town canoe with serial number 42048 is shown as 18 feet long, CS (common sense or standard) grade, Otca model with western red cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, ash decks, seats, and thwarts, and equipped with a keel. The canoe was built between February and April 1916. The original exterior paint was dark red. It was shipped to R.H. Macy & Co., Herald Square, New York, New York on January x9, 1917 (the scan is not clear as to the date). A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail images attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe.

Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Greg

Thank you so much Greg. Its such a privilege to be able to tap into the wealth of knowledge here. Ive currently just started my first restoration. removing the canvas on a @ 1930+ AA Kennebec invisible sponson canoe. The Otca will probably be my first project that will include extensive planking and rib replacement. I was pleased to get my first new issue of Wooden Canoe this month and especially liked the 'membership flyers' enclosed. I have a guy coming this morning to look at two OT project canoes and am looking forward to meeting him, possibly being able to introduce him to the existence of the WCHA. Id like to thank all the people that make this forum, Wooden Canoe mag., and the WCHA possible.
