Recomended wood for repairing stems?

Howie

Wooden Canoe Maniac
Typically I've used ash to repair stem tips in the past. But ash is so darn hard I've taken to predrilling the holes before pounding in the ring nails. What wood do you folks use?

Ash, white oak, like most common canoes are originally is what I use...either one is hard. Pre-drill if you have to.

I have used Ash exclusively for 23 years now. (I've never restored a Morris...) Pre-drilling is but a small thing in the overall picture of a good restoration.
