Probable Old Town

Enthusiastic about Wooden Canoes
I'm looking for info in serial number 16 - 56859. I believe it to be an Old Town, probably. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Lex

Lex,

Old Town serial number 56859 belonged to a 16-foot CS (or common sense) grade CR (or Charles River) model canoe built in 1919 and shipped in 1920 to Rochester, N.Y. It had open gunwales, birch decks, and ash thwarts and seats. It had a keel and its color was originally dark red.

The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

If you are selling your canoe and plan to use this build record information as part of an ad, please consider giving the WCHA credit for this information on eBay or craigslist or wherever your canoe is listed.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Norm,
Thank you very much for the info! The canoe is a new purchase. The seller thought it was another builder, but I thought it was an Old Town. The info you provided matches perfectly.
Thanks and have a Merry Christmas!

Lex, I'm glad that you realized the canoe was likely an Old Town and bid accordingly. The seller certainly had an interesting description of the canoe, but it certainly didn't look like a Shell Lake.

Yes! the Kennebeck reference on the ad made me look closer. I ruled that out quickly...
WCHA is a great resource and I appreciate all the information and kind responses.
Thanks
Lex
