Peterborough Minette

Crawforde

Curious about Wooden Canoes
I picked this up last year. A little paint and duct tape let me paddle it for a while and then life stepped in.
Anyway had a nice paddle and then decided it was time to fix her up.
Started the amazingly entertaining process of stripping the varnish with citristrip, brushes, scrapers, a d a little profanity, and giving her a good once over while I decide what to live with, what to fix, and what to replace.
The gunnels had been pulled in to 29” inches and the shape was off, so I know the thwart (not original) and seats won’t go back in. My wife and son aren’t into paddling and my daughter kayaks so I think a dedicated solo may be the way to go.
Comments and advice are welcome and appreciated.

this was a minetta that i rerailed and made a solo for a client, those models almost all had too short a thwart that made a flat run in the middle of the boat, likely the same guy cut them all for canadian, peterborough and chestnut without ever seeing a hull. this is the relaxed shape that results when the wood is allowed to go where it wants
