Peterborough Canoe Co. and more

I was amused by the implication in this video that venture capital was available in the United States for small boat companies navigating the transition from wood to plastics during the 1960s. This certainly was not true in Maine. The White Canoe Company and Rivers and Gilman's Indian Brand canoes both ceased production during that era due to financial and other issues. Old Town Canoe went through a wrenching transition during this period. It was said that "the demand for wooden boats dropped from a substantial business to nothing within a year." Banks and other sources of funding didn't want to touch the business with a stick.
