Painting The Gunwales

I am "repairing" (not restoring) a Wood and Canvas canoe - possibly a Chestnut Pal. I am not replacing the gunwales at this point but they have a few sections of different wood from a previous repair, and some sections repaired with PCWoody. Visually, I am thinking of painting them rather than varnishing them. The wood is currently bare and will be sanded smooth. Is this advisable? What product do you recommend?

Gunwales on a Chestnut Pal should be fairly easy to replace when you get around to it.
In the mean time, prime them and paint them with a marine enamel or any exterior oil enamel paint.
You would likely use a pint or less. Rustoleum would work.

Aha! Tremclad is a Rustoleum product. When I select "wood" it offers only water based rust paint. I'll go and see what Home Depot have to say.
