Outwales stripped

Have paint stripped from outwales.
What should I use for a wood preservative?
They are dry. Should I treat with turpentine and linseed oil?
What wood is typically used for outwales?
I want to leave the outwales un painted.

sounds about right.

Spruce, ash, oak, mahogany, cherry, walnut, and I'm sure other woods are used for outwales.

Turp and linseed oil sound fine. Other more expensive oils work too. Some are finished with oil only. Most finish with varnish.

I know I will have to replace some planking and possibly a couple of ribs before recanvasing.

I like to seal the inside of the gunwales with epoxy before attaching and varnishing.
