The Old Town canoe with serial number 20536 is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, HW (Heavy Water) model with western red cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, spruce finish rails, a keel, and sponsons. It was built between January and May, 1912. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on May 21st, 1912. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Please reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks Benson, what do finish rails look like? it seems to have very thin outers on it, couldnt quite figure them out. Guessing they are smaller in profile than regular gunwales?

Are you sure that you have an Old Town? The Carleton canoe with serial number 20536 is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Carleton model that was shipped as an Old Town HW. It had open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, a keel, and a floor rack. It was built between May, 1942 and September, 1943. The original exterior paint color was bright red. It shipped on October 1st, 1943 to White Haven, Penna. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Finish rails are the thin vertical strip that is part of a closed gunwale configuration. Your picture appears to show an open gunwale canoe where the outside gunwales have been replaced with non-standard ones. Are there any nail holes in the top of the original inside gunwales to indicate that it originally had closed gunwales with a rail cap? Are there any signs of diamond headed bolts, toggles from a floor rack, or screw holes from sponsons? Are the decks heart shaped? Thanks,

Benson

Andre,
The finish rails on my 1916 Old Town Charles River are an extra set running along each side above the water line.
