Michigan Canoe Nut
Helping my 16 year old friend restore a 1950 Yankee. They didnt plane the taper of the inwales towards the ends, so, they added "shims to fill in the gaps between the ribs and the gunwales. Never seen this before and you can tell it wasn't restored in any way. I said, "I bet the rails were put on on a Monday or a Friday....Nov. 16th 1949........a FRIDAY!!!!!!

I saw that on the 1964 OT Guide I'm working on. Maybe I have a Friday canoe, too!

I've also seen this on several Old Town canoes. I don't recall it from others, but it makes sense that shims would be used to remedy a poor fit now and then. This is still done today, and a few years ago Fine Woodworking magazine had an entire article on such fixes for woodworking mistakes.
