Old Town with sponsons

I just acquired an Old Town that had sponsons. Hull Number is 153227 16. Would like build sheet if possible. Curious to know if the canoe had sponsons from the factory or if they were added at some time. I would like to restore it without the sponsons, but wonder if that would not be a good thing to do as far as the value of the canoe goes. Anyone interested in some sponson frames?
Thanks for your thoughts and info.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 153227 is a 16 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, HW (heavy water) model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, a keel, and sponsons. It was built between July and November, 1949. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on May 2nd, 1950 to Lynchburg, Virginia. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. It is not unusual for a new owner to decide not to reinstall sponsons, a keel, or other optional parts during a restoration. You may want to save anything that you don't put back on in case a future owner does want them. The impact of this on the value of your canoe is probably not significant. The interest in your sponson frames is likely to be limited. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions,

Benson

Sponsons do not add to the value of a canoe. In some cases they may actually have the opposite affect.
The HW is actually nicer (IMO) with them removed

Send Howie a PM about the sponsons.
He has a 1944ish 16 footer that he is working on that has lost it's sponsons somewhere along the way (I left them in barn loft years ago). Maybe he would like to restore to original?

That's the canoe alright. I really appreciate it. Have sent in my membership. Thank you for the fast reply and the great info!
