My wifes grandmother owns an Old Town Conaoe Serial Number 132420 18. I believe she and my wife's grandfather bought it new shortly after being married in 1943, but am uncertain. Wondering if anyone here could help. The canoe is in amazing shape and hasn't been out of their garage in probably 20 or more years. Thanks in advance.

I'm sorry for the long delay in answering this request but it has been a busy summer. The Old Town canoe with serial number 132420 is an 18 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Guide's model with open spruce gunwales, ash decks, and a keel. It was built between May and July 1941. The original exterior canvas covering was painted dark green. It shipped on August 4th, 1941 to Peroia, Ill. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link behind the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions and I will try to respond more quickly.

Benson
