Curious about Wooden Canoes
Acquired an old town about a year ago and am finally starting to get into it. Looking for any information available. Hoping to pinpoint age specifically. As best as I can tell the SN is 87450 18. Thanks in advance!

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 87450 is an 18 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, GS (guide's special) model with red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, and a keel. It was built between March, 1925 and May, 1926. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on June 14th, 1926 to Brookline, Mass. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if neither of this description doesn't match. Feel free to reply if you have any other questions.

Thank you benson for the speedy reply! I’m excited to have found the information on this boat. It needs new decks and gunwales, inner and outer but other than that, the planking and ribs are in fantastic shape. It was glasses over at one point and I may peel the glass off and canvas it, not sure yet.
