Helping a friend replace the gunwales and wanted to know what they were originally. The canoe appears to be identical in shape and size to my 18ft 1931 HW but it's a much later clear Fiberglass wood canoe. Thanks for your help.

The Old Town with serial number 195985 is a 18 foot long Otca model with a keel. It was built in June, 1973. The original fiberglass exterior was left clear to show the natural wood. It shipped on July 12th, 1973 to Bolton Landing, New York. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match the canoe. The gunwales during this period were typically spruce for the inside and mahogany for the outside. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson

Do you have any idea what the standard wood for the outer gunwales would have been for an otca in 1973? I would also like to thank you for the build sheet.
Regards
Chris
