Curious about Wooden Canoes
Hello, I was hoping to get some information on Old Town 188196. I believe it is a casco but trying to confirm 18’ or 16’ and any other details from the archives. Thanks in advance for the help, it’s been very useful for my past canoes!

Welcome back, the Old Town canoe with serial number 188196 is a 16 foot long FG (fiberglass) model that weighed 84 pounds. It was built in January, 1972. The original exterior gelcoat colors were desert white on the top and red on the hull. It shipped on April 24th, 1972 to Concord, New Hampshire. The back side of this record shows that it had some slight shrinkage on the keel and stems, mold cracks on the stem end of the keel, and indentations on the rail near the mid-point so it was probably sold as a number two at a discount. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to donate or renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer this description doesn't match the canoe. The FG model was renamed as the Casco in the 1976 catalog. Feel free to reply if you have any other questions.
