Hi Folks,
I have my parents' canoe from when they bought it new in the 1970s. I need info on the canoe to register it with the MN DNR. The Serial # appears to be 190459. It's a yellow fiberglass canoe with molded plastic seats, wood inlay floor. It looks like the Carleton-16 from what I have seen in vintage catalog images. The MN DNR is asking for a receipt of sale, but I do not have it and I'm hoping that won't be a problem. There is an emblem from the dealer they purchased it from - Towner's in Rochester NY. Would you please provide any further info available about the canoe?
Thank you for any info you can share!
All best, DM

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 190459 is an 18 foot long Chipewyan so that isn't a good match. My guess is that you have serial number 199459. This is a 16 foot long fiberglass Carleton model with a keel that weighed 80 pounds. It was built in February, 1974. The original exterior gelcoat color was yellow. It shipped on February 11th, 1974 to Towner Brothers in Rochester, New York. The back side of this record shows that there was some thin gelcoat and a dry spot on the balsa floor. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions,

Benson
