Curious about Wooden Canoes
I just bought this canoe at auction. It is 16 foot and appears to be fiberglass with wood thwart and plastic seats attached with diamond head bolts. I an assuming it is an FG model though this one does not look like the pictures in the Old Town catalogs. Thanks for your help, Bob.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 187911 is a 16 foot long fiberglass Carleton model with a keel. It was built in November, 1971 which was the first year this model was introduced. The original exterior gelcoat color was dark green. It shipped on April 19th, 1972 to Bainbridge, New York. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. The hull of this canoe is the same as the FG model but the rails, seats, decks, etc. are completely different as you have noticed. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
