My canoe is an 18 foot Old Town , it has brass oarlocks, the oars have leather sleeves and brass around the tips, it is canvas and wood, and it is green. Serial # is 125 201 18. I need info about how old it is what model it is and anything else.
Thanks so much
Doug

Hello Doug,

The record for Old Town 125201 appears to fit your rowboat, except the length on the record looks like "13"... probably just how it appears, and it's actually "18".

125201 is a Special Double End Boat that was finished June-July of 1938. It's CS (common sense, or middle) grade, with open spruce gunwales, ash decks and spruce seats. It has a keel, outside stems, a floor rack, and was originally painted dark green. It was shipped to the Division of Conservation in Sandusky, Ohio, on July 11, 1938. The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to see a larger image.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

I've also uploaded information on the double ended boat from Old Town's 1938 catalog, courtesy of "The Complete Old Town Canoe Company Catalog Collection, 1901- 1993", available on CD from http://www.wcha.org/catalog/ and http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/cdrom.htm on the web. The boat in the catalog is available in the 16 foot size... perhaps the designation "special" means it was a special order.

If this record doesn't seem to fit your canoe, recheck the numbers on both stems and we can look some more.

We like seeing pictures, if you have any!

Kathy

13 foot Double end rowing canoe

Doug,
I would say that you have a very rare canoe of this model being that it is 13feet!! All that I'v ever seen, heard of or owned have been 16 feet. Where it is such a stable work platform, I can see why it was selected by the Ohio Conservation Dept. I use one of mine flyfishing and when I perform the annual cleanout and production recording on the 20 wood duck boxes I have placed and maintained since 1974 in the marsh and pond that surrounds our property on two sides. Being 40 plus inches wide, I'm able to safely stand on the seat or a board placed from gunnel to gunnel to reach the highest of the wood duck boxes. It would be my guess that your boat might just have been used by the Ohio Conservation Dept. for the same purpose.:D

Pictures would be wonderful-- as Ed said, this is an unusual "special" size. I can only imagine what a sweet little boat you have!
