Old Town Otca

Curious about Wooden Canoes
Started to disassemble for repair and found builder's note scrawled on hull as well as rag that was left behind. At first I thought it said 'completed' but not so sure now.

The rag is a funny little artifact. Can't imagine that someone in the factory didn't feel it in there while canvassing....

I'm thinking the cloth is part of a repair after the canvas got torn at some point.

So what is the rest of the notation on the hull after what looks like "Completers"? Perhaps this was written on one hull in a stack of partially completed canoes that the factory intended to be next up for completion. This looks like maybe an early Old Town, perhaps from the teens or earlier? (un-tapered ribs and thinner, lighter thwarts with the early profile)

Hi Michael, you are correct, s/n 39903 puts date build at 1915. I could still make out the paint pattern on the canvas and hope to duplicate it. Other notes on hull were indecipherable, perhaps they will mean something to you.

I am away from my build records, but it looks like this is a AA-grade Otca, and one of these from the teens should be stunning after restoration. And it looks like it had a nice design, maybe #26. Hope you'll post progress reports here.

So that does look like the paint on the canvas, thank you. I am fortunate that this canoe needs no frame replacement. Unfortunately the bow is not attached so that will be first in the list. Both inner and outer gunwales are in good shape. Short scarfs needed for outer. Couple of questions:
What type of wood should I use for inner stem on bow?
There are bolts with wing nuts midship, are these for an optional third thwart? Bolts seem to be same vintage of those used for seats and thwarts.
Who canes these original seats? I wanted to try and keep them.

The inside stems would have been ash as described at https://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/specific.gif from a 1920 catalog. The center thwarts were commonly mounted with wing nuts so they could easily be removed for courting. The thwarts often got lost. Many of the local canoe restorers will cane seats. The specialist listed below may be a good option. Good luck,

Benson
