researching canoe found in old cottage boat shed in indiana 85025 (18) has sponsons. any info appreciated

The Old Town canoe with serial number 85025 is an 18 foot long, GS (Guide's Special or low) grade, Guide's Special model canoe with red western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, and a keel. It was built between April and July, 1924. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on January 1st, 1925 to Washington, Conn. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. The sponsons are not mentioned in the build record so they may have been added after it left the factory but this is not typical. Are any of the digits not clear? It may help to review the information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?791 and confirm the numbers in each end. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Thanks,

Benson

Mr. Gray, The first digit is very faint, I will look at it more closely to verify. Thanks so much, Brendan Wahl

Mr. Gray, I tried again and now see that it reads 25025. I rubbed blue chalk on numbers then rubbed with rag and "voila", blue numbers. Thanks again, B.W.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 25025 is an 18 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, HW (heavy water) model with red western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, a keel, sponsons, one cane seat back, two number one grade spruce paddles, and a painter ring. It was built between January and April, 1913. The original exterior paint color was white with a four inch letter "W" in a gold circle with blue edging. It shipped on June 3rd, 1913. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below. The second half of my first message in this thread applies to this one so I won't repeat it. Please attach a picture of the "W" if it still has the original paint. Thanks,

Benson
