Old Town canoe built date

The Old Town canoe with serial number 20535 is an 16 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, MC model with closed spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, spruce outside finish rails, a keel, and a floor rack. It was built between January and March, 1912. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on March 19th, 1912 to Montreal, Canada. There was a previous request for a copy of this build record from Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada in July of 1978 as shown on the back side of this build record.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 235457 is a 16 foot long Chipewyan Camper model that weighed 73 pounds when it was built in August of 1980. The original exterior color was green. It shipped on February 24th, 1981 to Binghamton, New York. The back side of the card indicates that it has some rough skin and two small skin breaks on the inside that were filled. Scans showing both sides of these two build records can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if these descriptions don't match your canoe. It would really help if you could post some pictures of your canoe, especially ones showing the serial numbers from each end. Occasionally serial numbers were changed like this when a canoe was converted from an Old Town to a Carleton or vice versa. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you!

serial numbers - two serial numbers on one Old Town canoe - on over top of the other??? 20535 and 235457

Benson, thank you for the information. I just purchased this canoe from a junk store up the street for $500. It's in ok shape but needs some TLC and restoration.

All the best. SB

Everyone here loves pictures and I'm curious to see if we can figure out what you have. Can you attach some images of it?

My guess is that you have the Carleton canoe with serial number 20535 that was shipped as an Old Town. This is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Carleton model with open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, and a keel. It was built between May, 1942 and August, 1943. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It was shipped on September 9th, 1943 to Amyrna, Tennessee. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. The Old Town serial numbers were in the 13xxxx range at this time as shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/oldtown_chart.html so it appears that some attempt was made to change the serial number. This was one of the last wooden Carleton canoes that were ever made. Feel free to reply here if you have other questions.
