I recently purchased an old town canoe that has the serial # 84787-18? Can you tell me the age and any other information pertinent to the canoe that you may have. thanks so much. Bryan Thies, Montana

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 84787 is an 18 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade Charles River model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, and a keel. It was built between April, 1924 and December, 1925. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on March(?) 23rd, 1926 to Louisville, Kentucky. The back of the record indicates that it may have moved to Indianapolis, Indiana by 1972 when there was a previous request for a copy of this build record. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found below.

These scans and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer this description doesn't match. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson, Thanks so much for the information. I actually bought 2 at the same time. The other one I will have to get the serial number off of it. It appears to be the same model and year. I will eventually restore them both. Bryan

Benson, I think the serial number for the second canoe i bought is 45641 18. I believe it is also an old town canoe. It also is the same color green and 18 feet long. Looks like could possibly be older or seen harder use? What can you tell me about this one. Thanks so much for your help. Bryan

Well, the 18 on the end indicates that you have an 18 foot long canoe but the build record for serial number 45641 shows a 16 foot long double ended boat so that isn't a good match. The records for 145641 and 45647 don't show an 18 foot long canoe either. Can you provide pictures of the serial numbers from each end? Thanks,

Benson

Yah, I couldn't read for sure the middle number (6) very clearly. I will try to get a better view and take a pic when our weather warms up a bit. 30 below Wind chill out right now and they are in the shop. Thanks. I will be in touch. Bryan

I couldn't read for sure the middle number (6) very clearly.

The records for 45041, 45141, 45341, and 45741 all show 18 foot canoes. The one with number 45041 seems like the most likely since it shipped to Fort Dodge, Iowa on February 1st, 1917. It is an Otca and the other three are HW models that went to places on the east coast. Let me know what you find when it warms up. Good luck,

Benson
