Old Town Canoe # 174617

Blue Viking

Wooden Canoe Maniac
Looked at a canoe this morning....It has the original decal on the deck and is immaculate on the inside....Serial # 174617 on the stem. Needs re-canvassing but owners wife says he is asking $100...what a find!

The Old Town canoe with serial number 174617 is a 15 foot long fifty pound model with narrow two and 3/4 inch planking, and a keel. It was built between February and April, 1965. The original exterior paint color was pale blue. It shipped on June 11th, 1965 to Kingston, New York. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan was created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. A wooden canoe for $100 that only needs canvas and varnish sounds like a great deal. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks again for the information. I will get the hang of this Fourm yet!. I believe it may be that 15' model...I was only going by what I was told and have not spoken to the owner yet...will advise all on the general Forums if I get it.

I'd shake the dust out of my shoes right quick if I was you. Most of us have a tale of woe about being 2nd in line on a sweet deal of a canoe.
