The Old Town canoe with serial number 4252 is a 17 foot long, AA (or top) grade, HW (heavy water) model that was billed as an IF (Indian Fishing) model with a keel, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, closed spruce gunwales, a board backrest, and two spruce paddles that were five feet long. It was built between January and March, 1906. The original exterior paint color was dead grass with a "T" in a triangle on the right and left sides of the bow. It shipped on April 4th, 1906 to Concord, New Hampshire. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer this description doesn't match the canoe. Please post some more pictures. Feel free to reply if you have any other questions.

Old Town colors, always a popular topic.
Dead grass? Shall I attach images of my lawn?
Here are the various available OT color charts with some of the different years displayed next to each other to highlight the variability.

If you head down the Kirby path, keep in mind that for custom colors, they file by the name of the person who ordered it, not by color or hull that it is destined for.

I just found out that NickD is who a buddy of mine help with to purchase this canoe. Will be heading to swap canoes from VA to Long Island in a couple weeks. Will attempt to post current picks of the canoe shortly.

I have been in contact with some folks at the original school it was delivered to. While it may take a while to get to this restoration the school is looking to have some underclass students do a project to see if there are any relatives of the original student, will restore it and donate it to the school for a historic display. When I get to it I know I will need advice on revealing the dead grass color etc.

Well my Dead Grass painted 1906 canoe is here in VA. Will take the best pics I can of the color(s) of what appears to be the left over of the original paint. Nice back story of the canoe and more to follow. Thanks to Chris and Nick for getting it here.

These are the best Old Towns. The shape of the hull had not been flattened yet so they are excellent paddling canoes.
As a waterfowl hunter, the color dead grass green is one I have painted on my duck boats. It resembles a brown color more than green. You might find a patch of that color under the keel.
Look at the OT Green chart I attached (#8) in the related 2011 color discussion. That's pretty much the color, more brown than green.

well, well, well, I want to pick your mind! Stern stem is the shape of a few s's but not TOO bad. looks like 4 broken ribs but maybe some plank repairs. over all not bad. tips of the spruce gunnels 2-3 inches are gone. missing at least one and probably 2 thwarts. Might be copper tacks, lots of them. Look forward to seeing what others think and recommend

on the build sheet it says Model HW Billed as IF.

It was not unusual to substitute a similar model if the customer ordered one that wasn't in stock. This canoe was made on the HW form but was billed and delivered in place of an IF (a.k.a. Guide) model that was ordered. Let me know if this isn't clear.
