Old Town Berrigan Canoe

I want continue a thread that begins in the guest book. I want to thank the staff for giving me the time. I have learned a lot but there are still some things that Ì want talk about. I think we can agree that the Berrigan canoe is a elegant lookinĝ boat. I thìnk Ì learned that the name Berrigan is not the name of an Old Town canoe model, but is the name of a hull design. Is there anyone that doesn't agree.

The Berrigan was designed by John Berry and Tom Harrigan. Various versions of this design were built by other companies as well. The links below have more details. The serial number for your canoe is stamped on the nameplate (although I couldn't read it from the photograph you provided) and on the hull near one end. A similar example is shown in the first picture attached below. I may be able to provide the build record if you can supply this number. The record for a similar Berrigan is shown in the second attached picture. Let me know if this doesn't answer your question,

Hard to tell from that angle but it may be either 106265 or possibly 186265.

My guess is that you have the Old Town canoe with serial number 196965. This is a Berrigan model with a desert white hull and blue deck which weighed 69 pounds. It was built between July and August, 1973. This shipped on August 2nd, 1973 to Bangor, Maine. A scan of the build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. As you might have guessed, I want to sell the boat. I want to claim that it is a very special boat. I want to say that it is guaranteed draw a crowd at any canoe regata.

I found one from 1981. Its in pretty nice shape. We may take it out this weekend. I curious to see how long my old knee, and new knee can last.

So, the Berrigan Canoe is not really made for me. I'm 6'2'' 240.
So i reinforced the floor and added a recreational kayak seat, 2 hatch covers. thigh pads and a double bladed paddle. Mine, mine, mine, mine. What a Sweeeeeeeet ride. I know there is math and science to figure this out, but it felt like I used less effort then i do pushing my 17' Necky Sea Kayak. Tracking was good (ok, i also packraft so tracking was GREAT)

We did 8.7 miles Saturday on the lake. DREAMY ! Paddling Tracy(half my size) took it for a spin. She loved it. Check it out
