Old Town 786856

Hi, so I just purchased this canoe, it is a 16 foot Otca as far as I can tell. I can probably contact the company as it looks to be fairly new, I really like this forum so far though, very user friendly and lots of info.

Really looking forward to trying it out, I've never owned a wood/canvas before. I'd be curious to what the Guide 16 is like compared to the Otca as well...guess I'll have to find someone who has one.

Thanks,

Wilf

Old Town stopped keeping paper records in 1994 and everyone here only has access to the scanned records that stop around 1983 so there isn't much more that we can offer. There should be a hull identification number on the starboard stern that begins with XTC. The information at http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.htm describes how interpret the encoded date in this number. Yours is probably from the 2003-2004 era.

The biggest difference between the Otca and the Guide models is the height of the tips when viewed from the side. See http://www.oldtowncanoe.com/uploade...roducts/Canoe_Images/OTCA16_side_green_lg.png versus http://www.oldtowncanoe.com/uploade.../Canoe_Images/Guide16_wood_side_lg.png?n=3863 for example. The hull shapes are more similar as shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/hull-x-s.gif in a 1920s catalog. A local chapter listed at http://www.wcha.org/local-area-chapters/ is usually a good way to find other canoes to try. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions,

Thank you very much. I'll look for the xtc number. It is in very good condition, and i only paid 900$ for it. I was pretty suprised to see that a new one goes for 9000$.

I'm also glad that we got it when we did, it was stored outside for the past year or so, and so even though it's only a dozen years old, there is a bit of moss/mildew on the gunwales. There's also a few scratches on the canvas and a few places the paint is missing. I think we'll remove the gunwales and sand and varnish them, and then use filler i guess for those scratches, i've seen a couple threads about which products to use, any thoughts on that? Then spot prime, sand and paint. We'll also steel wool the interior, clean and re-varnish I think. Would be nice if this canoe lasted another 50 years at least, so we'd like to stay on top of things.

Thanks again for your quick response and I hope all is well,

Wilf
