This old canoe was purchased very used by my father for next to nothing back in the mid 60's. He might have gotten it for free. He restored it back then. It was used quite a bit after that and has a few small patches in the canvas now. Still very serviceable, but I have no need for it any more. What can you tell me about this canoe? Thanks.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 24988 is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Charles River model with red western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, oak outside finish rails, and a keel. It was built between January and June, 1913. The original exterior paint color was dark blue. It shipped on June 9th, 1913 to Akron, Ohio. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?57 may help you value and sell it if you don't want to keep it. Please mention the WCHA to the new owner. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks very much for the fast reply. I do have a question though. The canoe I have has sponsons. The bill PDF you attached doesn't include those in the description. Now I'm confused. What can I do from my end to help clarify this?

My guess is that your serial number is actually 124988 if it has sponsons. The Old Town canoe with this serial number is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, HW (Heavy Water) model with open spruce gunwales, ash decks, a keel, and sponsons. It was built between May, 1938 and March, 1939. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on March 31st, 1939 to Detroit, Michigan. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description still doesn't match your canoe. The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?791 may help you confirm the serial number in each end. Feel free to reply here with any additional questions.

I'll have to look at it closer. The number was very difficult to read. I'll post back here after I do. Thanks again Benson. You've been a great help.
