Need any info on this canoe. Also how to find a value. And where to get help on restoring mainly canvas work?

Thanks,
Shawn

Hello Shawn,

Old Town 20579 is an 18 foot CS (common sense or middle) grade CR (Charles River) model canoe that was completed January to April 1912 with red Western cedar planking, birch decks/thwarts/seat frames and a keel. It was originally dark green. It was shipped to Ann Arbor, MI, on April 8, 1912, which was two days before the sinking of the Titanic. Image of the scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

The following discussion may help you decide about "canoe value":

There is a link on the main page at www.wcha.org to builders and suppliers in various areas... if you say where you are, someone here may be able to direct you to someone who can help you. Many here have done their own canvassing, if that's all your canoe needs. If it needs a full restoration, you could get help with that too... either for someone to do the whole job or to work along side you or whatever is decided.

Best of luck with your canoe... post pictures if you need more specific advice.

Kathy
