"Needs a little work" is a common condition, but you can't really assess how much work it needs until you remove the canvas & get a really good look at all the wood. Posting pictures would help, but will never tell the entire story. If you're located near any members, you can probably get a knowledgable set of eyes on it, to give you a better idea of how much work it needs.

Old Town 117649 is a 16 foot CS (common sense or middle) grade Yankee model canoe completed April to June of 1936, with red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, ash decks/thwarts/seat frames a keel and outside stems. Originally it was dark green. It was shipped to Lake George, NY, on June 9, 1936. Image of the scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.
This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details.
