Old Town 168532

I found an Old Town canoe in New Hampshire with a free sign on it. Serial number 168532 16. It looks like it was stored upside down and a branch fell on it, breaking 6 ribs in the middle and punching a hole in the bottom. I'm wondering if it's worth fixing or cutting it in half and making shelves. Thanks.

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with the serial number 168532 is a 16 foot long Otca model with a keel that was built between February and May, 1959. The original exterior paint color was bright green. It shipped on May 22nd, 1959 to Winnisquam, New Hampshire. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Almost any damage to a wooden canoe can be repaired so the question becomes is this is a project that interests you? It is probably not worth paying a restorer to fix this canoe unless there is some sentimental or other value involved. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson
